| The Black Hills Surgery Center (BHSC)
is located in Rapid City, South Dakota and has been operating as a
licensed specialty hospital since 1997.
BHSC focuses primarily on orthopaedic and neurosurgical procedures.
BHSC prides itself on its hotel-like ambiance. Its modern building,
state-of-the art equipment, five star food and superior service
enable BHSC to meet or exceed the needs of patients and their surgeons.
BHSC was originally built in 1996 and is now approximately 50,000
square feet with seven operating rooms, 23 beds (licensed for 26)
and a clinical staff of 144. There are currently 103 physicians
who have medical staff privileges at Black Hills Surgery Center.
In 1998 MRI and CT services were added and in 2001 a 20,000 square
foot addition with 18 overnight rooms and support facilities was
completed. The facility is conveniently located with access to both
public and private transportation. The facility, including land,
are owned by Black Hills Surgery Center, LLP which is 51% owned
by MFC.
BHSC recently acquired the most powerful imaging tool available,
a 3-Tesla MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This state-of-the-art
imaging tool is twice as fast and powerful as standard MRI machines.
The 3-Tesla produces images that are of higher resolution and of
greater detail. This improves a physician's ability to see smaller
structures than conventional magnet systems, allowing for more accurate
diagnoses of both routine and hard-to-detect conditions. The increased
speed means that the scanning process is quicker for the patient.
Rapid City is South Dakota's second largest city with a population
of 61,000 The Metropolitan Statistical Area has 90,100 inhabitants
with a median age of 32.4. The population growth rate in this area
has been stable over the last five years.
Some 143,000 persons live within a 50 mile radius of Rapid City
and forms BHSC's primary service. Approximately 68% of BHSC patients
reside within this area. A further 20% of Black Hills Surgery Center's
patients reside within its secondary service area of a 150 mile
radius of Rapid City (combined population of 454,900).
